Namajunas began his MMA career as an amateur in 2010. At Minnesota Martial Arts Academy, she studied under Greg Nelson. She had a perfect amateur record of 4-0, with two wins by TKO and two by decision. Both finishes occurred in the first round.

On December 11, 2013, it was announced that Namajunas, along with ten other strawweight fighters, had been signed by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) to compete on season 20 of the Ultimate Fighter, which would crown the first-ever UFC strawweight champion. Gilbert Melendez selected Namajunas as the fourth pick. In the preliminary round of the tournament, she submitted Alex Chambers with a rear-naked choke. Namajunas faced Joanne Calderwood in the quarter-finals. She won the match by kimura in the second round.
Championship
Namajunas fought Angela Hill at UFC 192 on October 3, 2015. Namajunas knocked Hill out with a punch after some back-and-forth striking exchanges on the feet. Namajunas quickly secured a rear-naked choke as Hill stood up, submitting Hill in the first round. Namajunas faced the still-unbeaten Tecia Torres at UFC on Fox 19 on April 16, 2016, in a rematch of their 2013 fight at Invicta FC 6. Namajunas won the fight by unanimous decision.
